Professional Experience

I have practiced as a licensed psychologist since 1994.  I have extensive training in the psychodynamic and psychoanalytic approach to psychotherapy, from early in my career in the psychoanalytic psychotherapy pre-doctoral fellowship program at the Wright Institute Los Angeles, to my recent formal training in psychoanalysis at the Contemporary Freudian Psychoanalytic Training Institute (formerly the New York Freudian).

After completing a 2 year residency at The Traumatic Stress Institute intensely emerged in learning about conducting psychodynamic psychotherapy with traumatized individuals, I opened my own practice in rural Northern California, where it  was my privilege to work with a broad range of individuals suffering from a wide-range of psychological difficulties.  I also had an opportunity there to gain experience working with many couples and families.

Since relocating to the D.C. Metro area in 2006, I have developed a practice that includes psychotherapy, psychoanalysis, psychological evaluation, and teaching.

Psychotherapy

In addition to my expertise in the treatment of victims of trauma and interpersonal violence, and my general psychotherapy practitioner background, I have added a focus on working with families and individuals who are experiencing life transitions, such as cultural displacement and relocation, relationship losses, and receiving a diagnosis of serious illness.

Psychological Evaluations/Forensic Trauma

I have evaluated individuals involved in legal proceedings who have experienced traumatic life events to determine the presence/absence of PTSD and other trauma induced syndromes. I have evaluated a number of adult men who have claimed abuse by Catholic priests when they were children.

Teaching

I have been on the faculty of The Professional School of Psychology in Sacramento, CA and Argosy University in Arlington, VA. Currently, I am on the faculty at the Washington School of Psychiatry, where I teach in the Clinical Psychotherapy Practice Program.

Supervision/Consultation with Professionals

I am a supervisor to students in the Clinical Psychotherapy Practice Program at the Washington School of Psychiatry.  In 2009-2010, I completed a certificate program in supervision at the Washington School of Psychiatry.  Currently I also see individual mental health professionals on a fee for service basis for clinical supervision.

Writing

I am the author of several peer reviewed papers, and co-author with Laurie Pearlman, Ph.D. of the Life Orientation Inventory, an assessment instrument.  My most recent paper is “Psychoanalysis in Cyberspace” ( January, 2012 in the Candidate, an on-line publication of the International Psychoanalytic Association) which discusses the role of internet psychoanalysis in contemporary culture.

I am a member of the Contemporary Freudian Society, Division 39 (Psychoanalysis) and Division 56 (Trauma Psychology) of the American Psychological Association, The International Psychoanalytic Association, and the American Society of Law Psychology.
